Perhaps one more thing behind this story is the asymmetry between buyer and seller power. In this case, the realtors are backed up by a powerful lobby while buyers and sellers are fragmented. This is no different than big pharma, I think. In either case, people expect the government to step in, not necessarily because they can regulate, but because there is no other champion for the people.  The government, unfortunately, is no good at innovating but very good at regulating (cf. EU&#039;s sorry attempts to unbundle stuff for Windows.)
But whether regulation does any good is very much in question. I read recently that Pfizer got slapped with a $2.6B fine for breaking marketing rules in the US. That&#039;s all good and fine until they tell you that the fine represents 3 weeks&#039; worth of Pfizer&#039;s sales.</description>
